SAP ASE: Reorg for Operational Scalability

    This article discusses the SAP ASE reorg techniques that can be employed in order to reclaim fragmented table space.

    In today’s fast-paced and fluctuating economy, organizations are striving to manage ever-increasing data volumes efficiently and intelligently despite shorter maintenance and decision windows. These large volumes of data are prompting a need to reorganize database tables in an incremental fashion in order to improve data availability during maintenance windows and provide flexibility when executing the reorganization.

    SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise 15.7 SP100 (SAP ASE SP100) provides the ability to execute reorg utilities online and in an incremental manner, optimizing maintenance windows, and facilitating higher data availability.

    Techniques to Reorg in Order to Reclaim Space
    SAP ASE provides several methods of reclaiming fragmented table space, of which this article will discuss the database reorg techniques:
        • Online reorg
        • Incremental reorg

    Online Reorg
    It is common knowledge in the database world that as the volume of data increases, the maintenance window to defragment data as well as to check logical and physical integrity of data also increases. Maintenance windows are used to improve data quality by executing utilities that reorganize data on the table for better response time.
