There are two main dimensions to big data challenges which enterprises face today: Data quantity and data quality. By quantity we mean the challenge is scanning and analyzing and reporting on terabytes or even petabytes of data in real time. By quality we mean mining large volumes of unstructured data for trends in real time.

While SAP HANA combines best of breed solutions to both challenges, in this article I’ll first introduce you to unstructured data mining using the HANA search engine. Then I’ll demonstrate how easy it is to hook a PowerBuilder client onto HANA to rapidly display search results.

One important caveat, HANA text search is enterprise/industrial strength process with many powerful features. A complete series of articles should be written to illustrate each feature and to contrast and explain how to best use them in production situations.

As such this article will serve as a general introduction to text searching with HANA and using PowerBuilder as a client to the search process.
