Great DBA Series – Keeping Statistics up to Date

    Have you ever had an application that seemed relatively straightforward, with relatively small tables, yet the performance was abysmally poor? How about a more complex application, with performance that is wildly erratic? Or, an application whose performance was “great” until {fill in a specific date} and then, on a date where “absolutely nothing changed,” performance fell off of the proverbial cliff?

    If you answered “Yes” to any of those questions, there’s a good chance your statistics are out of date. In fact, when I go to a performance & tuning gig, that’s one of the first questions I ask, “When is the last time you updated your statistics?” Occasionally, that’s all that needs to be done & my assignment gets cut a bit short.
