A PHP Driver for ASE

By: Paul Vero on Oct 01, 2012

This is the third and final part of the series on the new SDK 15.7 scripting language drivers. This month I discuss the PHP driver for Sybase ASE. Once again, I’ll use the same format describing the language, how it uses Open Client, the PHP driver components, building PHP and running sample applications. From the PHP website, http://www.php.net, the language is explained: “PHP is a widelyused general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML.” In this introduction, I won’t expand upon Web development, but will cover the API used for ASE. Just like Perl and Python, I find PHP to be a simple and elegant language to use. You can learn more about it on the website.

Our script drivers were introduced to satisfy a request to provide vendor supported drivers to use with the scripting languages. There are third party implementations available, but the Sybase provided drivers run with Open Client distributed with SDK 15.7 or PC Client included with ASE 15.7. Keep this in mind since a requirement for deploying PHP applications using the ASE PHP driver includes a working Open Client installation. Unlike the Perl and Python drivers, the PHP driver doesn’t extend the Database interface of PHP; it’s an ASE specific API interfacing with Open Client. There’s more on this as we explore the ASE Database Driver for PHP.
