PowerBuilder Meets GNU/GPL

Over the past decade there has been a plethora of software released into the public domain, commonly known as “Open Source” under the General Public License banner. Over the past few years, I have been involved with many PowerBuilder projects that have successfully utilized open source software in combination with PowerBuilder to deliver amazing extra application functionality or support applications that have a much lower TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) – especially when deployed into production considering the savings in extra licensing fees alone. These open source solutions are readily available and easy to find using your favourite internet search engine. They are also quite often very easy to integrate within the PowerBuilder realm using a little “elbow grease”. One such recent project I worked on revolved around embedding various database technologies, so I thought I would talk about one of these data engine integrations with PowerBuilder.
