Help convince SAP to take positive action on PowerBuilder

By: Mr. Adrian Bridgwater on Aug 12, 2013

Do you want to convince SAP to take some positive action with regard to PowerBuilder…?

The community is rallying behind a hosted web site at https://www.causes.com/campaigns/532 where you can read comments made by eLearnIT's Yakov Werde and campaign leader Bruce Armstrong as they highlight the lack of clarity that appears to exist from within the SAP parent motherlode when it comes to the Sybase PowerBuilder IDE.

PowerBuilder based systems run some of the world's most important organizations. Government departments, multi-national corporations, industry leaders and thousands of smaller organizations use powerbuilder systems to process millions of transactions daily.

SAP acquired Sybase over three years ago. PowerBuilder was included in the basket of acquired technologies.

There was a major release (12.5) done in August of 2011 while Sybase was still operating as a independant subsidiary. However, since Sybase was integrated fully into SAP in early 2012 the only significant action taken with regard to PowerBuilder has been the removal of the web deployment capability.

PowerBuilder still hasn't been added to the SAP price books, it's not a topic covered at SAP TechEd and there is no clear roadmap or a release date for a future version.

This community support effort highlights the fact that if SAP doesn't find that the product fits with their core direction, it should keep the best interests of its customers in mind and find another avenue of support for the product.

Perhaps it should spin it off as a separate entity and see if somebody picks it up (similar to what Borland did with Delphi), make the code available to one of the current partners so they can move forward with it, or release it to open source (similar to what Apache did with Flex).

ISUG-TECH urges you to click the link above and here and sign the petition, which is hoped to be presented to Dr Vishal Sikka, member of the executive board of SAP.
