PowerBuilder's Future: Get To Know HANA's 'real time' proposition

By: Mr. Adrian Bridgwater on Mar 03, 2013

PowerBuilder training pro and all round developer guidance mentor Mr Yakov Werde has been getting more and more vocal in recent days and weeks over the subject of PowerBuilder's future.

    As well he might --

SAP clearly said “all the right things to all the right people” in the first year to eighteen months following the Sybase acquisition, before it then more publically starting to pare back, hone, or re-position and tweak the technology stack it had purchased into the SAP-shaped beast that it really wanted.

So what was and/or is to become of PowerBuilder?

MVP.pngWerde comes from a unique perspective and vantage point on this subject as an SAP Mentor. He talks of “unrest and uncertainty” over the the PowerBuilder platform’s future and mentions the kind of discussions that have been going on among the user communities that he integrates with so very closely to deliver the education services that he is known for.

Citing a recent LinkedIn discussion initiated by Shawn Pleska, Werde says he wants to give users advice so that they themselves can participate in assuring their own future.

    He writes as follows:

“SAP is highly focused on bringing HANA, its real time platform, to market. SAP understands that HANA technology can be a ‘game changer’ through enabling real time business.  With reference to our universe, SAP views HANA as the base that ISV’s and consultants can use to bring an entirely new generation of applications to market. It’s my *educated guess* that the importance SAP’s ELT ascribe to PowerBuilder (the amount of engineering resources allocated and non-HANA related functionality implemented) is currently linked to the value PowerBuilder adds to the HANA acceptance effort.”

So Wedre urges tech pros of all levels to get familiar with HANA and visit http://www.saphana.com/welcome

“Watch the brief video on the Why link (I believe our point is at 3:40 in) and the trio of ELT videos on the Learn link. I might also speculate that you’d get a ‘lot of love’ from SAP sales executives who might just be tempted to call on your accounts and clients for/with if you if you provide a HANA DB platform integration.”

“Personally, I’m pleased to share with you my own professional commitment to invest the necessary time and effort to build strong HANA expertise which I look forward to sharing with my consulting and training clients as well as the PowerBuilder community at large.”

We can now shape our own futures, let’s do it.

Well it is nice if somebody tells us to get to know HANA. I personally would prefer an official statement from SAP including features and release date for PowerBuilder 15 and future versions ...
