Time is More Valuable than Money - Be a Proactive DBA! [Part I]

This article takes a detailed look at query tuning and server configurations from post upgrade/migration perspective.

Why is it important to learn about the post migration steps to be a proactive DBA? The answer is simple – SAP ASE 15’s query optimizer and the query execution engine. It has had a major overhaul compared to prior versions. The shift in requirements over the years towards mixed workloads (i.e. concurrent OLTP and DSS application profiles) stretched the processing methods of "nested loop" joins almost to the breaking point in the past. But nowadays joins of ten or more tables, complex search arguments, and aggregations are all too common.

SAP ASE 15 had addressed these issues to build an optimizer and execution engine that is extensible allowing for new and complex algorithms (joins, grouping, union etc.), index types and server configuration parameter changes. In this article, we will cover the topic for post upgrade assessment and query optimization.

Several new configuration parameters were added with version 15x. SAP ASE 15.7 is a more stable release than releases prior to SAP ASE 15.x. The SAP ASE 16 GA released in Q2 2014 has further additions built on this query optimizer/engine with the enhancement goal of The four “S”motto: Speed/Scale/Security/Simplicity as pointed out in Andrew Melkonyan's post here.
